Commercial Licensing & Usage Rights

Last updated: January 2026

1. Overview

PatternCanva grants you commercial usage rights for all patterns and designs generated through our Service. This Commercial License Agreement outlines the specific terms and conditions for using AI-generated patterns in commercial projects.

By using PatternCanva, you automatically receive a Standard Commercial License for all patterns you generate, subject to your subscription plan. Additional Extended License options may be available for specific use cases.

2. License Types

2.1 Standard Commercial License

The Standard Commercial License is included with all PatternCanva subscriptions and grants you the following rights:

  • Commercial use for physical products (POD, merchandise, textiles, etc.)
  • Use in digital products and applications (with restrictions on resale)
  • Integration into design projects for client work
  • Unlimited print runs for physical products
  • No attribution required (optional attribution appreciated)
  • Zero royalty fees - no ongoing payments for sold products

2.2 Extended License

The Extended License provides additional rights beyond the Standard License:

  • All rights included in the Standard Commercial License
  • Resale of digital assets (patterns as digital products) - subject to plan restrictions
  • Enhanced distribution rights for software applications
  • Broader template usage rights

Note: Extended License availability and specific terms vary by subscription plan. Please refer to your plan details or contact us for more information.

Zero Royalty Policy

All PatternCanva licenses are royalty-free. Once you've generated a pattern, you are not required to pay any ongoing royalties, commissions, or percentage-based fees for products sold featuring your patterns. This applies to all sales, regardless of volume or platform.

3. License ID System

Every 4K pattern generated through PatternCanva includes a unique License ID embedded in the metadata. This system provides legal protection and verification for commercial use.

How License ID Protects You:

  • Copyright Verification: Each pattern has a verifiable License ID proving your legitimate right to use it commercially
  • Etsy/Shopify Protection: In the event of copyright disputes, your License ID serves as proof of authorized commercial usage
  • Legal Defense: The License ID establishes your legal standing if challenged on third-party platforms
  • Audit Trail: Maintains a clear record of when and how the pattern was generated, tied to your account

Accessing Your License ID: License IDs are automatically generated and attached to each pattern. You can view your License IDs in your PatternCanva account dashboard and download receipts that include the License ID information.

Verification: If you need to verify a License ID or provide proof of licensing for a platform (Etsy, Shopify, Amazon, etc.), you can contact our support team with the License ID, and we will provide official verification documentation.

4. Permitted Uses

Under the Standard Commercial License, you may:

  • Print-on-Demand (POD) Products: Use patterns on physical products sold through POD services (Printful, Printify, Redbubble, Society6, etc.)
  • E-commerce Platforms: Sell products featuring patterns on Etsy, Shopify, Amazon, and other e-commerce platforms
  • Physical Merchandise: Create and sell physical products like apparel, home decor, accessories, and textiles
  • Client Work: Use patterns in design projects for clients (the final product must be a physical item, not the pattern itself)
  • Marketing Materials: Use patterns in promotional materials, advertisements, and product photography
  • Unlimited Production: Manufacture and sell unlimited quantities of products featuring your patterns

5. Prohibited Uses

The following uses are not permitted under the Standard Commercial License:

Strictly Prohibited:

  • Direct Resale of Original AI Image Files: You may not sell, distribute, or resell the original 4K pattern image files as standalone digital products. Patterns must be applied to physical products or integrated into larger design works.
  • Pattern Pack Sales: Creating and selling collections or packs of patterns as downloadable digital products is prohibited under the Standard License
  • Stock Image Websites: Uploading patterns to stock photo/image websites (Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, etc.) for sale is not permitted
  • Template Marketplaces: Selling patterns as templates or design resources on marketplaces (Creative Market, Envato, etc.) requires an Extended License

Additionally prohibited:

  • Using patterns in ways that violate our Terms of Service or applicable laws
  • Claiming ownership of the AI technology or algorithms used to generate patterns
  • Reselling patterns in ways that directly compete with PatternCanva's service

6. POD Services Integration

Patterns generated with PatternCanva are fully licensed for use with all major Print-on-Demand (POD) services, including but not limited to:

  • Printful, Printify, Gooten, SPOD, Print Aura
  • Redbubble, Society6, TeePublic, Zazzle
  • Shopify Print, Etsy Print Providers
  • Amazon Merch on Demand
  • All other POD platforms and services

You have full commercial rights to sell products featuring PatternCanva-generated patterns through any POD service, with no additional licensing fees or royalties.

7. Ownership & Exclusivity

Pattern Ownership: Once generated, you own the rights to use the pattern commercially as outlined in this license. However, you do not own the AI technology or models used to create it.

Non-Exclusive License: Patterns are generated using AI models that may produce similar results for different users. Your license is non-exclusive, meaning others may generate similar or identical patterns. However, your specific generated pattern file and its associated License ID are unique to your account.

Custom Pattern Requests: For truly unique or exclusive patterns, please contact us about custom generation services.

8. License Transfer

Commercial licenses are tied to the PatternCanva account that generated the pattern. Licenses may not be transferred or resold to third parties.

If you sell a business that includes products featuring PatternCanva patterns, the new owner must have their own PatternCanva account and licenses. Contact us for guidance on business transfer scenarios.

9. Termination

If your PatternCanva subscription is canceled or terminated, you retain all commercial usage rights for patterns generated during your active subscription period. However, you will lose access to your PatternCanva account, download history, and License ID verification services unless otherwise specified in your plan.

10. Platform Compliance

When selling products featuring PatternCanva patterns on third-party platforms (Etsy, Shopify, Amazon, etc.), you are responsible for:

  • Complying with each platform's specific policies and requirements
  • Maintaining records of your License IDs for verification if needed
  • Responding appropriately to any copyright inquiries (your License ID serves as proof of authorization)
  • Notifying PatternCanva support if you encounter platform-specific licensing issues

Platform Support: If you receive a copyright claim on any platform regarding a PatternCanva-generated pattern, contact our support team with your License ID, and we will provide official verification documentation to resolve the dispute.

11. Modifications & Derivative Works

You may modify, edit, or create derivative works based on PatternCanva-generated patterns for use in your commercial projects. Modified patterns are still subject to the same license terms and restrictions outlined in this agreement.

13. Changes to License Terms

PatternCanva reserves the right to modify these license terms. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Patterns generated before changes take effect remain subject to the license terms in effect at the time of generation.
